Dear Fellow Immigrant Parents,

Important Information to All Parents Who Have Relocated Their Family to a New Country

Making the decision to relocate your family, uprooting them and yourself from everything you know, is often a difficult but necessary decision.

Possibly, the move to a foreign country was because of a career change or better opportunities.

Whatever the reason for moving to a foreign country, we all know that it most likely wasn’t an easy process. There were many factors taken into consideration and many questions that were on your mind:

  • Will we make it in a different country?
  • Will we be able to adapt to new and different ways?
  • How will our culture be viewed when we arrive?
  • Will we be accepted? Will we be able to make friends?

With all of those questions that you had to ask yourself, I’m sure one of the most important considerations involved your children.

Your children share a big portion of your entire world. As parents, you would do anything for them. I’m sure that before you made the choice to relocate, questions regarding your children were on the top of your list. Would they be able to adjust, make friends, and adapt? All of these issues were very important to you. Finally, after much research and thought, you packed up your belongings and left everything that was familiar to you. You left the country of your birth and relocated to an English speaking country.

YOU DID IT!….YOU FACED YOUR FEARS AND RELOCATED. YOU’VE BEEN ACCEPTED IN YOUR COMMUNITY, YOU HAVE FRIENDS, AND YOUR FAMILY IS DOING WELL.

AND EVEN THOUGH YOU ARE VERY HAPPY AND SATISFIED WITH YOUR CHOICE, THERE IS ONE SINGLE FACT THAT IS EATING AWAY AT YOUR EMOTIONS DAY AND NIGHT:

Deep Inside the Core of Your Being, You Hold Your Culture, Your Traditions, and the Language of Your Homeland Dear to Your Heart. And although you made the right choice by moving to another country, you feel helpless as you witness your children lost in a culture that is not their own…

It wasn’t something that happened intentionally. Maybe your children were brought to this English speaking country at a very young age, or were born here.

Regardless of the reason, there is a PROBLEM. Every time your child comes home from school to explain a new and exciting tradition or holiday they have learned, or learn more about the history of this country, your emotions are mixed. You are happy that they are doing so well, but deep inside you have a longing in your heart to pass on your heritage, your culture, your language, and their true history on to them.

I am here to tell you that it can be done!

Your precious child really can have the best of both worlds!

" Preserving Your Heritage Language is the key to preserving your next generation, giving your child a true sense of identity and a high level of self esteem."

-- Soji Oyenuga, 2006

Your child can fit in with the culture of the English speaking country where you live, but also:

  • Learn their own native language

  • Appreciate and embrace their roots

  • Experience the same pride that you do over your true heritage, holidays, and history

We Are Immigrant Parents With A Passion To Help Other Immigrant Parents Pass On Their Heritage Language and Culture To Their Next Generation In A Super Easy and Fun Way

Why We Decided To Write This eBook

(The True Life Story of a Passionate Immigrant Parent)

It Dawned on My Wife and I That Our Daughter May Never Understand Nor Speak Our Native Heritage Language

Our Canadian born daughter was a little over 5 years old when it dawned on my wife and I that she may never understand nor speak our native heritage language. We had to discover how to instruct her in such a way that she would be able to carry on a simple conversation in our native language, and something had to be done soon.

Our daughter, Oreoluwa, Ore for short, had been attending a 2 hour weekly session at the Heritage Language School that teaches children from our culture how to speak and understand Yoruba. Originally from Nigeria, our heritage language Yoruba was being lost as the years went on and more and more people immigrated to this country. The school is a blessing that has helped better introduce Ore to our language, culture and given her the opportunity to interact with other children from within our culture. The school offers all children the opportunity to learn what our home country and culture is about. The problem at the time with the current curriculum was that beyond the 2 hour Yoruba lesson, she had very little follow-up for the rest of the week. Everywhere she looks, she is bombarded with only the English language. Be it at school, church, the playground, sporting events, etc she sees nothing but English. At home, we tried to institute 'Yoruba language only speaking policy' but we did not follow through and were not well prepared on how to truly teach Ore Yoruba as a second language. You learn your language and customs at a very young age and some find it difficult to instruct others. We simply lacked the training and discipline of teaching Yoruba as a second language and knew we must find the right technique and consistency that would ensure success.

What a Shame That She Would Not Be Able To Communicate With Her Relatives

Frustrated with the current situation and observing lots of older immigrant children that had lost touch with their parent’s language and culture; we did not want Ore to grow up that way. With a passion we disliked the certain future for Ore that could possibly spell identity confusion for her. We also thought of the awkwardness of family gatherings back in Nigeria, where Ore would appear an outcast not understanding our language. We were determined not to create a future situation whereby Ore would be like a stranger to her grandparents that do not speak English. What a shame that she would not be able to communicate with her relatives. Something had to change, so we embarked on a journey to find solution to this problem.

We Left No Stone Unturned In Search For Solution

In our search for a creative solution, we began interviewing immigrant parents that we found were successful in teaching their children to speak their ancestral language. As well, we also interviewed immigrant parents that were experiencing the same problem as we were. We interviewed heritage language professors; we spoke to and gathered ideas from the Heritage Language teachers. We also used other sources as well in the course of our search. Ultimately, my wife and I organized a mini-seminar, our private focus group; that featured immigrant parents from almost all continents of the world to discuss issues on the importance of passing on their ancestral language to their English only speaking children.

The focus group was an amazing eye opener for all of us. We discovered that the issue of passing on heritage languages to children of immigrants such as ourselves was an important issue in the mind of all those involved. Our focus group also reached out further into their communities and we found that lots of immigrants were in the same situation as we were when it came to instructing their children in the mother tongue of the family. They lacked the time and know how of how to pass on their cherished heritage language and culture to their children, especially when their child’s first spoken language was English (or the language of their current country of residency). With lots of generous ideas, techniques and the simple motivation to teach our child we began implementing simple tools for Ore.

Solutions That Took Years To Gather At Your Finger Tips

We have gathered hundreds of tips and leads on how to instruct a child and broke those down into the most important, hence the 101 tips. Within weeks, Ore was able to carry on simple conversation with us in Yoruba and she was motivated daily with fun items to challenge her young mind. She began to become more interested in wanting to know more of Yoruba language and the culture. It was a great success to us, although there was still some mix of English in her Yoruba language. This was a big stride. Getting started was the most important aspect. We achieved to get her to speak our language in such a short period of time, we decided to hone in on the special ideas that really motivated her to make that amount of time even less.

We now see this as a way to pay back the community we love and to help other immigrants to teach their children how to speak in their mother tongue. We have created some novel ideas, tips and tricks to provide children a fun and easy way to learn. This was the motivating factor for writing this book - the thought of millions of children losing the ability to speak their native language or forget specials customs was heartbreaking. Please don’t get me wrong, I love this country and all that it has done for me, but I also believe we should cherish our history and share it with others. If we are unable to pass this on to our children it would be a terrible shame. How would they pass this on to their children, or share it with their community? Have you ever been to a restaurant that claims it was “authentic” only to discover the food was bland and lacked the flavour of culture? How simple it would have been to teach the child who prepared the meal the proper ingredients to make it as their ancestors had.

You Are Not Alone - Don't Give Up!

This System Will Help You Salvage Your Next Generation From Being Lost Culturally

One thing I want to make clear to all parents is that they are not alone and teaching their child can be a fun and enlightening time for all. How much closer will you feel with your children when everyone speaks the same language and understands the culture and history? We have found that this has brought our family together and made that family ties even stronger. We have strived to make this book easy to use while creating a pleasant learning experience for your child. With our sincerest regards, we wish you much success to you and your family.

We know from experience in speaking with many immigrant parents that they experience extreme levels of guilt and remorse as their children join family gatherings and have nothing in common with grandparents and other relatives. Returning to their homeland for a visit is truly a trip to a foreign country, as they have no way to communicate with the people of the country, don’t appreciate the food, and don’t have any type of connection to the symbolism of their homeland.

In addition to the guilt and sense of loss that is often felt by the older generations who did not pass on their language or heritage, there is also another twist that must be considered.

Recently, we had a phone conversation with an American mom who was in her early 40’s. Raised by her grandparents, who were immigrants from Poland, she expressed her own pain over her lack of knowledge of her heritage. Her grandparents spoke fluent Polish, but never teaching her the language; she only recalls a few words and a handful of Polish songs. The food, festivals, and cultural meaning that she does understand have a special and deep place in her heart, but still there is the sense of regret that she was not taught more. What she does know, she has passed on to her own children, but it is really not enough to give them a true sense of their heritage or identity.

As parents, it is not only a duty but an HONOR to pass on our heritage, our language, and our culture to our children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

“This is an excellent program. It is written with simplicity and is easy to use by anyone. This is a must-have for all parents who are concerned about having their children speak and understand their native language and also for parents back home. Our traditional societies are fast becoming westernized and we stand the risk of losing our children to foreign cultures. This is a valuable investment for our future generations.”

“The driving force of any culture is the language. Culture is meaningless without language and a man or woman without culture is lost indeed. In spite of the repeated clamor for assimilation in the new world, most immigrant parents yearn for their children to have some cultural identity. Their most important tool is language and yet, their greatest challenge is finding effective teaching methods.
This ebook provides a modern approach to teaching your native language and it’s nuances in the context of play and entertainment. It’s simplicity, practicality and attention to individual progress has personally impressed me. I have no doubt that children involved in this program will be able to have a meaningful conversation with grandparents and other family members!”
